Frosted glass is glass with a translucent, matte surface — it lets light through but blocks a clear view. If you’ve ever walked past a meeting room where you could see shapes and movement but not faces, that’s frosted glass doing its job.
For offices and commercial spaces in Sydney, it’s one of the most practical and cost-effective ways to add privacy, reinforce branding, and make a space look genuinely considered rather than thrown together.
Film or Etched — What’s the Difference?
Most businesses in Sydney use frosted window film rather than actual etched glass, and for good reason. Here’s how they differ:
Frosted window film is a self-adhesive vinyl applied directly to existing glass. It looks almost identical to etched glass at a fraction of the cost, can be custom-cut with logos or patterns, and — crucially for tenants — it’s fully removable. Most of our commercial jobs use film.
Etched glass is a permanent process where the glass itself is treated with acid or sandblasting. It’s more durable and has a premium feel, but it’s significantly more expensive and can’t be updated without replacing the glass panel entirely. Better suited to owner-occupied spaces where you’re not going anywhere.
For most growing businesses — especially those leasing office space — film is the smarter choice. You get the look without locking yourself in. If you want to update your branding in two years, you peel it off and start fresh.
What Do People Actually Use It For?
In a commercial context, frosted glass film comes up in a few situations over and over:
Meeting room partitions — Glass-walled meeting rooms need frosting for confidential conversations and focused work. We typically apply a band across mid-height, a full frost, or a custom-cut logo panel. Atlantis Healthcare in the CBD is a good example — full-height logo frosting on their boardroom glass.
Entry doors and shopfronts — A frosted door panel with your logo cut out is one of the most impactful things you can do to a leased space. It immediately reads as intentional and professional. We’ve done this for dozens of businesses across Surry Hills, Pyrmont, North Sydney and the CBD.
Compliance strips — Building codes require visual indicators on full-height glass to prevent people walking into it. Most businesses put a plain strip. We use that as a branding opportunity — a frosted band with a logo, a tagline, or a pattern that works with the space.
Office partitions and dividers — Open-plan offices often use glass partitions for sound separation without blocking light. Frosting part of that glass creates privacy without closing the space off entirely. Our window frosting service covers all of these applications.
Can You Add Branding to Frosted Glass?
Yes — and this is where it gets genuinely useful for businesses. Rather than applying a plain white frost, we can cut your logo, brand mark, or pattern into the film. The result is a negative-cut logo in glass — the frosted area surrounds the clear logo shape, so the logo appears transparent against the frosted background.
It’s subtle, sharp, and it reinforces your brand at every point in a client’s visit — walking through the door, sitting in the meeting room, waiting in reception. Our office signage team handles this as part of most commercial fitout jobs we take on.
How Long Does Frosted Film Last?
Professionally installed frosted window film typically lasts 10 to 15 years in a commercial interior. Exterior applications are shorter — UV exposure and weather take a toll — but most office applications are internal and well-protected.
The main thing that shortens the lifespan is poor installation — bubbling, lifting edges, contamination under the film. We’ve ripped out a lot of DIY jobs and seen the results up close. Professional installation on clean glass in a climate-controlled office environment should give you well over a decade without issues.
We’re based in Newtown and work across Greater Sydney. Measure-up is free and most jobs are turned around within a week of sign-off.
